At Coppice Farm, we recognise the importance PE plays in the curriculum and are committed to providing all children with opportunities to engage fully in Physical Education. The aim of our PE curriculum is to develop children's basic physical competencies, build confidence in their ability and build the foundations for a lifelong love of sport, physical activity and a healthy lifestyle.
PE lessons encourage children to compete against themselves and others whilst being challenged to improve their physical, social, emotional and thinking skills.
Our PE curriculum is in line with the National Curriculum objectives are we aim to ensure all our pupils:
- Develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
- Are physically active for sustained periods of time
- Engage in competitive sports and activities
- Lead healthy, active lives
INTENT
We intend for our PE curriculum to build secure, long-term PE knowledge, skills and understanding through carefully sequenced concepts.
We intend for our PE curriculum to be carefully structured so that pupils develop secure, long-term knowledge, skills, and understanding through clearly sequenced physical concepts which are supported with retrieval practice from previous units and year groups. From the early development of fundamental movement skills such as balance, coordination, agility, and control, pupils are supported to build confidence in how their bodies move whilst having the strength to make good progress. As they progress, these skills are systematically refined and applied across a wide range of physical activities, games, and sports. Prior learning is regularly revisited and built upon, allowing pupils to deepen their understanding of tactics, rules, and healthy participation. This coherent sequencing ensures all pupils develop physical literacy, resilience, and a lifelong understanding of the importance of physical activity and wellbeing.
We intend for our PE curriculum to develop independent, motivated athletes.
We intend for our PE curriculum to develop pupils who are independent, motivated, and confident athletes. Through progressive opportunities to practise, apply, and refine skills, pupils learn how to challenge themselves, set personal goals, and reflect on their own performance whilst thinking creatively to find solutions. They are encouraged to take increasing ownership of warm-ups, tactics, and decision-making, fostering independence and resilience. By providing a positive and supportive environment that celebrates effort, teamwork, and perseverance, our curriculum inspires pupils to enjoy physical activity, develop self-belief, and maintain an active lifestyle both in school and beyond.
We intend for our PE curriculum to foster unity through recognising diverse contributions to physical education and sport in the wider world.
We intend for our PE curriculum to promote unity, respect, and inclusion by recognising and celebrating the diverse contributions to physical education and sport from across the world. Pupils are introduced to a wide range of activities, sports, and physical traditions that reflect different cultures, histories, and communities. Through learning about inspirational athletes, teams, and sporting events from diverse backgrounds, pupils develop respect for others and an understanding of shared values such as fairness, teamwork, and perseverance. By highlighting sport as a universal language that brings people together, our curriculum encourages pupils to appreciate diversity, work collaboratively, and develop a strong sense of belonging.
We intend for our PE curriculum to be inclusive, ensuring all children can access physical education and school sport, supporting both enjoyment and excellence.
We intend for our PE curriculum to be inclusive and ambitious, ensuring that every child can access high-quality physical education and school sport and experience enjoyment, positivity and success. Lessons are carefully adapted through differentiation, appropriate equipment, and supportive teaching strategies so that all pupils, regardless of ability or need, can participate meaningfully. Opportunities for challenge and progression are embedded to allow pupils to excel, while a positive and encouraging environment promotes confidence, wellbeing, and a sense of achievement. By valuing effort, participation, and personal improvement, our curriculum ensures that all children develop a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity and the skills needed to thrive.
IMPLEMENTATION
Throughout the year, pupils at Coppice Farm will experience our collaborative teaching of the PE curriculum. The use of our specialist sports coaches and enrichment coach allows the children to focus on key skills and learning, whilst experiencing competitive but friendly games with peers in their own year group and occasionally, different ones.
Teaching staff's PE lessons are planned using the Get Set 4 PE platform, which aligns with our core values and the objectives laid out in the National Curriculum. Get Set 4 PE is planned so that progression is built into the scheme, which ensures our children are increasingly
challenged as they move up through the school.
The curriculum planning in PE is carried out in three phases (long-term, medium-term and short-term). The PE curriculum at Coppice Farm has been put together to create a broad and balanced curriculum that is exciting for our children to learn through.
PE is taught twice a week at Coppice Farm, as we are committed to providing and promoting an active and healthy balanced lifestyle and curriculum. We are part of an active community of friendly and competitive local competitions and compete in the Gedling area football league.
IMPACT
Coppice Farm are committed to delivering high-quality PE lessons so to support our coaching staff, we have listened to staff voice and provided teachers and teaching assistants with CPD to improve confidence in the subject. As a subject leader, regular and ongoing CPD is vital to providing the best opportunities for our children, most recently looking at supporting our SEND children in PE sessions.
Pupils at Coppice Farm enjoy PE and the vast range of sports they get to cover over the year alongside our enrichment opportunities such as handball. We have a large number of pupils sign up to our extra-curricular sports clubs with Key Stage 1 athletics and Key Stage 2 dance being extremely popular! At Coppice Farm, we listen to our pupils and what they would enjoy for their extra curricular activities as we believe it is important to let them have their voice for what they will enjoy.
