RSHE
PSHE * SMSC * RSE * LIFE SKILLS
SUBJECT LEAD: MRS D QUARLESS-MCGEE
Here at Coppice Farm Primary, we teach RSHE in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum. We aim to deliver a high-quality curriculum, covering all aspects of PSHE, RSE, SMSC and Life Skills, which teaches pupils to develop skills and knowledge which enable them to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in the future.
Using a range of resources, we aim to deliver quality first teaching that follows the 1decision planning, lesson units and resources, alongside D.A.R.T Life Skills and The Great Project Healthy Relationships, enabling and encouraging reflection, discussion, questions, sharing and experiencing life together. All RSHE lessons are taught in a safe, caring and nurturing way, building mutual trust and respect between all within the classroom.
RSHE is taught progressively throughout the school and is adapted to meet the needs and experiences of our community. We want children to develop independence, resilience, respect, trust, social justice and tolerance.
The curriculum will demonstrate appropriate subject knowledge and understanding to fulfil the duties of the Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) whereby schools must, ‘provide a balanced and broadly-based curriculum which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils and prepares them for the opportunities and responsibilities and experiences for later life.’
INTENT
Our intention is that when children leave Coppice Farm, they will do so with the knowledge, understanding and emotions to be able to play an active, positive and successful role in today’s diverse society. In our school, we want our children to have high aspirations, a belief in themselves and to realise that anything is possible if they put their minds to it. Our aim is to help them develop the knowledge, skills and attributes they need to manage their lives, now and in the future. We want our children to learn how to understand and regulate their feelings and to know what it means to be kind, honest and reliable. We want our children to recognise and value difference and grow up to be tolerant of others. Safety is of utmost importance as is increasing skills of independence and a sense responsibility. We want our children to stay healthy, safe and prepared for life. In an ever changing and increasingly digital world, we want to ensure our child are equipped with the knowledge and understanding of how to keep themselves safe both on and offline.
Relationship and Sex Education (RSE) became a statutory subject in all primary schools from September 2020. Today’s children and young people are growing up in an increasingly complex world which presents many positive and exciting opportunities, alongside different challenges and risks. Therefore, it is essential that children and young people need to know how to be safe and healthy, and how to manage their academic, personal and social lives in a positive way. As part of their RSHE education, our children are taught about healthy, respectful relationships, focusing on family and friendships, in all contexts, including online – we want our children to leave Coppice Farm and continue to grow and thrive, living healthy, safe and feeling prepared for the next stage of their lives and beyond.
Our PSHE curriculum develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills which will enable children to access the wider curriculum and prepare them to be a global citizen now and in their future roles within a global community. It promotes positive behaviour, mental health and the moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils, preparing them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. Our school values are integral to this approach as well as linking with British Values.
IMPLEMENTATION
Our RSHE curriculum is delivered using the latest 1decision programme and covers
- Personal Development
- Relationships Education
- Health Education
- PSHE
D.A.R.T AND The Great Project life skills programmes are also taught in Upper Key Stage 2 as part of transition up to Year 7.
EYFS the Foundation Stage, PSHE and citizenship is taught as an integral part of topic work and is embedded throughout the curriculum - the 1decision EYFS Early Learning Goals mapping document is available below.
In Key Stage 1 and 2, PSHE is taught through a clear and comprehensive scheme of work in line with the National Curriculum. We ensure we cover the Health and Well-Being, Relationships and Living in the Wider World Learning Opportunities set out in the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study, which comprehensively cover the statutory Health Education and Relationships Education guidance.
Pupils are taught RSHE using 1decision, which 'enhances Primary PSHE & RSHE provisions, supports the introduction of British values and Protected Characteristics to ultimately improve personal development for every pupil'.
In addition to Relationships Education, we also teach Health Education and Sex Education which is also covered in our Science Curriculum, teaching about different kinds of relationships, including same sex relationships and gender identity because it is important that our children should have an understanding of the full diversity of the world they live in and be prepared for life in modern Britain. The RSE aspects of PSHE are also taught through the 1decision in age appropriate units in line with statutory guidance.
PSHE, including SMSC and BV, is an integral part of our whole school curriculum, and is therefore often taught within another subject area. Visitors such as emergency services and the NHS staff also complement our curriculum to offer additional, real life learning.
Assemblies are linked to our school values, British Values, PSHE and SMSC as well as other aspects of wellbeing and safety such as mental health and keeping safe.
The 1decision curriculum mapping for years 1-6 can bee seen below.
