RSHE
SUBJECT LEAD: Miss Laura Thurman
Here at Coppice Farm Primary, we teach RSHE in line with the requirements of the National Curriculum. We aim to deliver a high-quality curriculum covering all aspects of PSHE, RSE, SMSC, and Life Skills, which equips pupils with the skills and knowledge they need to access the wider curriculum and prepares them to be global citizens both now and in the future.
Using a range of resources, we deliver quality-first teaching that follows the 1decision planning and lesson units, alongside No Outsiders and the Anti-Racist Education Programme. These programmes enable and encourage reflection, discussion, questioning, and the sharing of experiences. All RSHE lessons are taught in a safe, caring, and nurturing way, building mutual trust and respect between everyone in the classroom.
RSHE is taught progressively throughout the school and is adapted to meet the needs and experiences of our community. We want children to develop independence, resilience, respect, trust, social justice, and tolerance.
The curriculum demonstrates appropriate subject knowledge and understanding to fulfil the duties of Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), whereby schools must “provide a balanced and broadly-based curriculum which promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental, and physical development of pupils and prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences of later life.”
INTENT
We intend for our PSHE curriculum to build secure, long‑term learning through carefully sequenced knowledge and skills.
Our PSHE curriculum is structured in small, meaningful steps that build pupils’ understanding of themselves, others and the wider world. Using Rosenshine’s principles, teachers revisit key concepts regularly, model explicitly and provide guided practice to ensure children develop secure emotional literacy, healthy relationship skills and a strong understanding of how to stay safe, including online. Retrieval practice strengthens long‑term knowledge so pupils leave Coppice Farm confident, capable and ready to navigate modern life.
We intend for our PSHE curriculum to develop independent, motivated learners.
Through our values of motivation, resilience and positivity, pupils learn to recognise and regulate their emotions, set goals and persevere when faced with challenge. Structured opportunities for independent reflection and decision‑making help children build the skills and attributes needed to manage their lives now and in the future. By celebrating effort, progress and responsible choices, we nurture confident learners who believe in themselves and understand that they can achieve.
We intend for our PSHE curriculum to foster unity, cultural awareness and respect for diversity.
PSHE provides purposeful opportunities for pupils to explore different families, cultures, beliefs and identities, both within the UK and globally. Through discussion, stories and real‑life contexts, children learn to challenge stereotypes, value difference and show empathy. Our values of unity and compassion underpin this work, helping pupils develop respectful, healthy relationships and preparing them to be thoughtful, informed citizens in a diverse society.
We intend for our PSHE curriculum to be inclusive and ensure all children can access and excel.
We believe every child can thrive in PSHE. High‑quality first teaching, careful attention to cognitive load and regular checks for understanding ensure all pupils — including those with SEND and those who are disadvantaged — can participate fully and succeed. Our curriculum promotes safety, wellbeing and personal responsibility, equipping children with the knowledge and confidence to stay healthy, safe and prepared for the next stage of their lives, including through statutory Relationships, Sex and Health Education (RSHE).
IMPLEMENTATION
Our RSHE curriculum is delivered through three core programmes: 1Decision, No Outsiders by Andrew Moffat, and our Anti-Racist Education Programme. Together, these provide pupils with a broad, balanced, and inclusive curriculum that equips them with the knowledge, skills, and values they need to thrive in modern Britain.
In EYFS, PSHE and citizenship are taught as an integral part of topic work and are embedded across the curriculum, with 1Decision’s Early Learning Goals mapping document supporting progression from the very start of school. In Key Stages 1 and 2, pupils follow a clear and comprehensive scheme of work aligned with the National Curriculum and the PSHE Association’s Programme of Study, ensuring coverage of Health and Well-Being, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World.
Through 1Decision, children explore Personal Development, Relationships Education, Health Education, and PSHE in age-appropriate ways. This programme also supports the teaching of British Values and Protected Characteristics, helping children develop respect, empathy, and resilience. No Outsiders complements this by focusing on equality, diversity, and inclusion, teaching children to respect and celebrate differences. Alongside this, our Anti-Racist Education Programme gives pupils the tools and understanding to challenge prejudice and discrimination, while fostering a culture of fairness, tolerance, and social justice.
In addition to Relationships Education, we teach Health Education and Sex Education, which are also covered in our Science curriculum. This includes learning about different kinds of relationships, such as same-sex relationships and gender identity, to ensure children gain a clear understanding of the diversity of the world they live in.
PSHE, including SMSC and British Values, is woven throughout our wider curriculum and enriched through assemblies, community links, and visits from professionals such as the emergency services and NHS staff, which bring learning to life.
