At Coppice Farm Primary School our teaching of Religious Education follows the guidance given in the latest Agreed Syllabus for Nottingham City and Nottinghamshire. We strive to develop the children’s knowledge and understanding of the major world faiths enabling children to develop a sound knowledge not only of Christianity but also of other world religions. We aim to engage, encourage, challenge and inspire children so they are equipped with the skills and knowledge to answer challenging questions. Our children are given the chance to reflect on what it means to have a faith and to develop their own spiritual knowledge and understanding.
INTENT
We intend for our RE curriculum to build secure, long-term learning through carefully sequenced knowledge and skills.
Our RE curriculum follows the Nottinghamshire Agreed Syllabus for RE 2021–2026, which aims to help children know and understand religions and worldviews, express ideas and insights, and develop the skills to engage with them thoughtfully. Learning is carefully sequenced so that pupils build knowledge in small steps, revisit key knowledge through retrieval and strengthen understanding over time. Through stories, discussions, enquiry and reflection, children learn about different beliefs while developing the confidence to think for themselves. We encourage unity by helping pupils appreciate diversity and show respect for different viewpoints, and we develop resilience as they explore big questions and reflect on their own ideas. Our approach ensures that pupils leave each stage of learning with secure knowledge, increasing confidence and a deeper understanding of the world around them.
We intend for our curriculum to develop independent, motivated learners.
Our RE curriculum encourages pupils to become thoughtful, independent learners who are motivated to explore different religions and worldviews with curiosity and care. Following the aims of the Nottinghamshire Agreed Syllabus, pupils are taught to ask meaningful questions, express their own ideas and engage confidently with a range of beliefs and perspectives. Through our school values of motivation and creativity, pupils learn to investigate religious stories, practices and concepts in increasingly independent ways, using discussion, reflection and enquiry to deepen understanding. We promote positivity by celebrating pupils’ growing confidence in expressing their ideas, even when exploring challenging or unfamiliar concepts. As they build these skills, pupils become more independent in their thinking and more open‑minded in their responses, preparing them to contribute respectfully and thoughtfully to a diverse society.
We intend for our RE curriculum to foster unity, cultural awareness and respect for diversity.
RE offers meaningful opportunities for pupils to learn about a wide range of religions, worldviews and cultural traditions, helping them recognise both shared human experiences and the richness of diversity. Pupils develop understanding and respect for different beliefs and ways of life as they explore how people make sense of the world. Our values of unity and positivity underpin this approach, encouraging pupils to challenge stereotypes, appreciate multiple perspectives and respond to others with empathy and fairness. Through this work, children grow as informed, respectful members of a diverse society.
We intend for our curriculum to be inclusive and ensure all children can access and excel.
At our school, we ensure every child, including those with SEND and those who are disadvantaged can participate fully through high‑quality teaching, carefully adapted learning, and opportunities to explore lived experiences. Grounded in our school values of unity and resilience, we foster a supportive and positive learning environment where pupils feel safe to discuss big questions, appreciate different perspectives, and persevere in developing thoughtful, respectful responses. Our focus on positivity, clear modelling and structured support enables every child to build confidence, make progress and succeed. In this way, RE becomes a subject in which all pupils can build secure understanding, grow as reflective individuals, and contribute positively to their diverse world.
IMPLEMENTATION
We plan our Religious Education curriculum in accordance with the Nottinghamshire Agreed Syllabus. We ensure that the topics studied in Religious Education build upon prior learning. At Coppice Farm we offer opportunities for children of all abilities to develop their skills and knowledge in each unit, and we ensure that the planned progression built into the scheme of work offers the children an increasing challenge as they move through the school.
To enhance children's learning we draw upon children's own experiences of religion, whether this be through celebrations, visiting places of worship or learning about it outside of school.
As the children progress through the school they will encounter different religious and non-religious world views. An important part of RE is that children are encouraged to reflect on their learning and make their own decisions about what they believe. At Coppice Farm children are encouraged to share their thoughts respectfully through discussion and listening and responding to the views of others.
IMPACT
Our school vision is 'nurturing and inspiring the best in everyone'.
The teaching of RE supports this vision as we hope that by providing the children with the opportunities to celebrate themselves and develop respect for others it will equip them with the knowledge and skills to be the best version of themselves and enable them to have a positive impact in society.
