Intent

We intend for our Writing curriculum to build secure, long-term writing knowledge through carefully sequenced concepts.

Knowledge is introduced in manageable steps as part of book-based units with a specific genre and writing outcome, regular retrieval of key vocabulary and concepts are planned within this. Each unit of learning builds on the previous unit both within the year group and from previous years. At the start of each unit the purpose, audience and form are introduced as well as the grammatical skills required for each unit. We review prior learning before introducing new content using independent pieces of writing at the end of each unit as well as ongoing formative assessment during other taught writing lessons. This develops strength as writing knowledge including grammatical knowledge, transcription skills as well as composition becomes secure, enabling children to understand how writing skills are used within different genres.

We intend for our Writing curriculum to develop independent, motivated writers.

We intend for our Writing curriculum to develop independent, motivated writers who can communicate their ideas clearly, creatively and confidently. Through a carefully sequenced curriculum, pupils are taught to write for a range of purposes and audiences, developing secure transcription skills alongside a growing understanding of vocabulary, grammar and text structure. We encourage children to take pride in their writing, to edit and improve their work, and to see themselves as authors whose voices matter. By providing engaging stimuli, high-quality model texts and regular opportunities to write across the curriculum, we aim to nurture enjoyment, resilience and independence so that all pupils leave primary school as capable and enthusiastic writers.

We intend for our writing curriculum to foster unity through recognising diverse contributions to writing in the wider world.

We intend for our writing curriculum to foster unity through recognising and valuing the diverse contributions to writing in the wider world. Pupils are introduced to a rich range of authors, poets and storytellers from different cultures, backgrounds and traditions, helping them to understand that writing is a powerful, shared form of human expression. Through exploring and responding to a variety of voices and perspectives, children develop respect for differences, an appreciation of common themes and experiences, and a sense of connection with others. This inclusive approach encourages pupils to see themselves as writers with stories worth telling, while promoting empathy, equality and belonging within our school community.

We intend for our Writing curriculum to be inclusive, ensuring all children can access writing for purpose and pleasure and excel.

Through positivity, we want our Writing curriculum to be inclusive, ensuring all children can access writing for both purpose and pleasure. Through high-quality teaching, adaptive approaches and carefully chosen resources, barriers to learning are identified and reduced so that every pupil can achieve success. We provide clear models, structured scaffolds and opportunities for creativity, enabling children of all abilities and backgrounds to develop confidence and independence as writers. By fostering a supportive and inclusive environment, we aim for all pupils to enjoy writing, express their ideas effectively and reach their full potential.

Writing in the Early Years

As soon as our children join us in Enchanted Elm, they begin their journey of becoming writers. They enjoy a variety of activities which develop their fine motor skills which in turn enables them to properly hold their pens and pencils. They have fun mark making with lots of different tools before beginning to form letters. As part of their Monster Phonics scheme, they learn to write the sounds that they learn each week, creating meaningful links between their reading and writing skills from as young as four years old. Children study a breadth of story books linked to their topics, instilling a love of reading from as early as possible which hopefully will follow them through school. In their continuous provision, thoughtfully planned activities are made available to encourage independent application of their learning.
